My Own Shopify Store — $2.5M in Revenue Over 5 Years
I didn't just build this store — I ran it. $2.5M in revenue over 5 years taught me what actually converts, what wastes money, and what breaks at scale.

Not a Client Project — My Own Store
RetroGamingHouse.com wasn't a freelance project. It was my business. I built it from scratch, ran it for 5 years, and generated $2.5M in revenue. Every decision — from the theme architecture to the checkout flow to the product photography — was mine to make and mine to measure.
Running your own store teaches you things client work never can. I learned what actually moves the needle on conversion rates, which "best practices" are myths, and what happens when your checkout breaks at 2 AM on a Saturday during a sale. I built a custom Shopify theme optimized for the retro gaming niche — not because a brief told me to, but because my revenue depended on it.
The Challenges I Faced
Running a retro gaming e-commerce store meant solving problems that most developers never encounter:
- Complex technical products that needed simple, approachable presentation for non-technical buyers
- Competing with DIY solutions while justifying premium pricing through convenience and quality
- Managing customer expectations about game compatibility and performance across dozens of platforms
- Building trust in a market full of low-quality competitors and dropshippers
- Scaling fulfillment and support without destroying margins
What I Built and Why
Interactive Product Comparison
I built a comparison tool that let customers compare Raspberry Pi, Odroid, and other platforms side by side. Technical specs, game compatibility, and performance metrics in plain language — because I was tired of answering the same "which one should I buy?" support tickets.
Game Library Database
A searchable database of 100,000+ games with filters by console, genre, and year. I built this because the number one pre-purchase question was always "does it have [specific game]?" Letting customers verify before buying reduced support load and returns significantly.
Video-First Product Pages
Every product featured setup videos, gameplay footage, and real customer testimonials. I learned early that non-technical customers need to see exactly what they're buying and how easy it is to use — static images weren't enough.
Bundle Builder Tool
I built a custom bundle builder so customers could combine consoles, controllers, and accessories. Dynamic pricing and compatibility warnings ensured every bundle worked perfectly together — and it meaningfully increased average order value.
Features That Drove Sales
Quick Start Guides
Illustrated setup guides with timing ("2 minutes to gaming") that I created because support tickets for "how do I set this up?" were eating into my margins.
Live Demo Schedule
Weekly live streams showcasing products in action. Nothing builds trust faster than seeing the product work in real time and getting questions answered live.
Nostalgia Marketing
Product pages with era-appropriate design elements and copywriting that triggers positive gaming memories. Emotional connection sells better than spec sheets.
Community Features
Forums for game recommendations, setup tips, and nostalgia sharing. Community engagement drove repeat business better than any email campaign I tried.
Why This Matters
When I build your store, I'm not guessing. I've done this myself — $2.5M worth.
Most developers build stores and walk away. I built one, ran it for 5 years, handled the customer service, managed the fulfillment, optimized the ads, fixed the bugs at 2 AM, and watched the revenue dashboard every single day.
That experience is in every store I build now. I know what it feels like when your checkout flow has too many steps, because I've watched my own customers abandon cart. I know which apps are worth paying for and which ones slow your site down for nothing, because I've tested them with my own money on the line.
You're not hiring a developer who read about e-commerce. You're hiring one who's lived it.
Advanced Gaming E-commerce Features
Performance Calculator
Shows expected FPS and resolution for specific games on each platform, helping customers choose the right system for their needs.
Smart Upsells
Recommendation engine for controllers, memory cards, and accessories based on the games customers are interested in playing.
Setup Simulator
Interactive tool showing exactly what's in the box and how to connect everything, reducing setup anxiety for non-technical customers.
